This paper examines the various tree germplasm management systems currently in practice across West and Central Africa and evaluates their potential to sustain plantation forestry in the long term. As natural forests continue to decline under pressure from deforestation and land conversion, well-managed plantations using high-quality genetic material represent a critical alternative for maintaining timber supply and ecosystem services.
The study reviews seed orchards, clonal propagation programs, and community-based tree nurseries, assessing each system’s effectiveness in preserving genetic diversity, ensuring seed quality, and responding to the increasing demands of large-scale reforestation programs. Special attention is given to the challenges of genetic erosion and the importance of sourcing planting material that is well-adapted to local environmental conditions.
For BCL and its partners engaged in reforestation and forest restoration across Central Africa, the insights provided by this research are directly applicable to improving the quality and resilience of plantation programs. Investing in robust germplasm management systems is essential to guaranteeing the ecological and economic success of forest restoration initiatives over the coming decades.
