Growth modelling of Eucalyptus grandis W.Hill ex Maiden TOOLUR in the north-western highlands of Cameroon

Eucalyptus grandis is one of the most widely planted tree species in Cameroon’s North-Western Highlands, valued for its rapid growth and wide range of end uses including timber, fuelwood, and pulpwood. This study develops growth models for Eucalyptus grandis plantations in this region, providing quantitative tools to predict stand development, optimize rotation lengths, and inform sustainable plantation management decisions.

Using data collected from permanent sample plots across a range of plantation ages and site conditions, the research applies statistical modelling techniques to describe the relationships between tree height, diameter, basal area, and stand age. The resulting models allow forest managers to estimate future yields and adjust management practices — including thinning and fertilization — to maximize both productivity and ecological sustainability.

Accurate growth modelling is a foundational tool for the development of sustainable plantation forestry in Central Africa. By providing reliable yield predictions adapted to local conditions in the Cameroonian Highlands, this research supports both the economic planning of forestry enterprises and the broader goal of reducing deforestation pressure on natural forests — a priority shared by BCL in its conservation and reforestation programs.
