Understanding how forest disturbance affects the composition and structure of tree communities is fundamental to conservation planning and forest management. This study compares the floristic and structural characteristics of tree vegetation across three sites subjected to different levels of human disturbance within the dense humid forest of Cameroon, ranging from relatively undisturbed forest to highly degraded areas subjected to logging and agricultural encroachment.
Systematic botanical surveys document species richness, abundance, basal area, and structural diversity at each site, enabling a rigorous comparison of how disturbance gradients shape tree communities. The results reveal significant changes in species composition and structural complexity with increasing disturbance, with late-successional species giving way to pioneer and disturbance-tolerant taxa in more degraded areas.
These findings provide a scientific foundation for prioritizing conservation interventions in Cameroonian forests, identifying areas where restoration is most needed and where natural regeneration potential remains sufficient to recover original forest composition. BCL uses this type of comparative ecological research to guide its field programs and advocate for the protection of the most biologically sensitive forest areas in Central Africa.
